The Week:
In 2016, photographer Vincent Tullo attended the 140th Westminster Dog Show. Photographing the behind-the-scenes action in stark black and white, Tullo artfully captured the triumph and the torment experienced by both the dogs and their human handlers.
In advance of the 2017 Westminster Dog Show, which begins Feb. 11, enjoy some of last year’s doggy drama.
I post this less about the dog show, which is great fun to watch and is on this weekend, and more about the choice of black and white for the photos. I love B&W photography but it doesn’t work in all situations. I think this is one of those times when it really doesn’t work.
maybe the b&w was chosen because of necessity – some of those photos look noisy as hell, they would’ve looked even crappier in color.
I suspect the negative reaction to this set of black and white photos might have something to do with what’s known in the profession as “Frankenstein lighting” than to it being black and white. I liked many of the photos, but when the source of light is intentionally coming from down below and casting upside down shadows on the subjects, it’s just plain ugly.
Often black and white removes distracting elements. Not sure that serves any real purpose here. It’s more of an affectation, exacerbated by really bad lighting choices.
