Google, Apple, Facebook and Uber plan to draft a joint letter opposing Trump’s travel ban

Recode:

Alphabet, Apple, Facebook, Uber and Stripe, along with a consumer packaged goods company and others, are working together on a letter opposing U.S. President Trump’s travel ban, according to sources.

Tech companies are leading the effort but are working to involve other industries, the sources say. The letter will be the first major push from big U.S. businesses to try to support immigration in the wake of a recent travel restriction order by Trump.

The restrictions affect the tech sector in a huge way. If it continues, Apple will have issues with WWDC in a few months.

  1. “…affect the tech sector in a huge way.”

Really? A temporary moratorium on travel into the US from seven countries, most of which are not particularly technologically advanced, and which represent about 3% of the world’s population are going to affect the tech sector in a huge way?

I’m thinking moral posturing is more likely to be the issue.

  2. What exactly would you expect them to do? This letter, the State Department memo from yesterday, street and airport protests… it all sends a message. Whether the morons who put this policy in place will get the message is doubtful, but to just sit by and do nothing would be much worse.

  3. What would be much worse, and why? Enforcing the borders and improving the security of the nation?

  4. Nothing about this ban improves security. It empowers our enemies and diminishes us as the ostensible moral arbiter of the free world.

And it reinforces mechanisms by which anyone in power can remove potential political opposition with a manufactured accusation.

  5. “…most of which are not particularly technologically advanced…” You should ask Maryam Mirzakhani, just to name one of hundreds.

There’s no vinism like chauvinism, like no vinism I know….

  6. Bannon is an idiot for doing this. He has a hate-on for tech because it’s an international sector which tends to be either liberal or libertarian. Basically everything he hates.

Unfortunately this will lead more violence and terrorism which he’s perfectly fine with.

  7. “Nothing about this ban improves security.” You may disapprove of the restrictions, but making patently false statements just to score a rhetorical point is dishonest. These were countries identified by the previous administration as being the most serious sources of terrorism. The ban doesn’t include 40 other Muslim majority nations. Part of the problem with these seven is that vetting is difficult or impossible. No one travels to Syria to investigate the criminal background of a refugee, just to give one example.

  8. It empowers our enemies

not really. there was a guy on NPR’s On Point who reminded us that the violent terrorist groups dont give a shit — they hated us before, they hated us during Obama’s terms, they’ll continue hating us. if theyre already cutting heads off theres really not much more you need to worry about.

i think trump will be lousy, but i think liberals are exaggerating every and any scenario in order to criticize.

  9. i agree that it’s inaccurate and alarmist to call this a “Muslim ban” since Muslims are entirely free to enter the US from the majority of Muslim countries. these were selected entirely for their danger level, whether one agrees with it or not.

i do wish my fellow liberals would be more intellectually honest.

  10. its not a fact that it will or could lead to more violence and terrorism. thats pure opinion, which cant be proven which makes it kinda low value.

ISIS was sawing off heads and blowing people up under Obama without a second thought. theyre not going to get “enraged” over this 90-day ban from 7 countries or whatever.

  11. Hello John, I think there are a few questions you should ask yourself … here is a sample list – only 4 minutes long!

  12. Especially now that the Countering Violent Extremism task force will be directed to focus solely on Muslims and ignore home-grown terrorism from our very own white Christian nationalists and the directionless, undereducated kids they recruit.

Bannon doesn’t care about our tech sector. He only cares about eliminating political opposition while he starts another war overseas.

Targeting people by their religion isn’t about security; it’s about creating scapegoats to cover a power grab. It was a foolish, evil thing to do 80 years ago, and it’s evil now.
