Tim Cook on immigration executive order

Tim Cook, in an email to employees:

Team,

In my conversations with officials here in Washington this week, I’ve made it clear that Apple believes deeply in the importance of immigration — both to our company and to our nation’s future. Apple would not exist without immigration, let alone thrive and innovate the way we do.

I’ve heard from many of you who are deeply concerned about the executive order issued yesterday restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries. I share your concerns. It is not a policy we support.

There are employees at Apple who are directly affected by yesterday’s immigration order. Our HR, Legal and Security teams are in contact with them, and Apple will do everything we can to support them. We’re providing resources on AppleWeb for anyone with questions or concerns about immigration policies. And we have reached out to the White House to explain the negative effect on our coworkers and our company.

As I’ve said many times, diversity makes our team stronger. And if there’s one thing I know about the people at Apple, it’s the depth of our empathy and support for one another. It’s as important now as it’s ever been, and it will not weaken one bit. I know I can count on all of you to make sure everyone at Apple feels welcome, respected and valued.

Apple is open. Open to everyone, no matter where they come from, which language they speak, who they love or how they worship. Our employees represent the finest talent in the world, and our team hails from every corner of the globe.

In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, “We may have all come on different ships, but we are in the same boat now.”

Tim

These are extraordinary times. As much disinformation as information. Pressures from every side. I do not envy Tim Cook his position in all this.

  1. With all due respect, Tim Cook is not the person that we should be using our sympathy for on this issue. Think about it.

  2. My point was that Tim Cook is in an unenviable position. Treacherous waters on all sides. But your point is well taken.

  3. Drump is a treasonous SOB. This is a call to arms. There is no more wait and see. The garbage that this administration puts forth is dangerous to everyone. If you don’t resist now, more onerous things will come. The next election that matters is in nov 2018. vote, volunteer, contribute, and finally, sue.

    Screw these people.

  4. I think he needs to keep his powder dry. I’m sure we’ve got huge battles with Trump attempting to force Apple to build iPhones in the US without comprehending why that won’t work.

It’s not just the huge number of people assembling the parts (probably a lot less than it use to be because of automation, robots) but also the proximity of the suppliers around the factory that can do JIT at an extraordinary level.

If Apple were like other phone manufacturers then they could possibly do this because were talking about such relatively short production runs. But when you ship over 10 million on your opening weekends this is not going to happen.

This is not something that can be conceived of by someone who builds hotels.

  5. You should copy this:
“This is not something that can be conceived of by someone who builds hotels.”
so you can paste it in every post.

  6. Good on Tim Cook and the rest of the tech companies coming out against this. They know exactly where a good number of their techs and engineers come from. Maybe if the government focused on education (instead of trying to put in an Education Secretary who thinks science is a joke), we’d have even more people for the tech industry. (No need to stop immigration even then, however, when the tech sector would be growing even more.)

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I’d say this was part of a larger attempt to squeeze tech industries. However, I’m not one, and I know Trump is a bumbling but power-mad narcissistic fool. (Except for Ancient Aliens. That’s got legs. 😉 )

  7. Amen. I’m mad as hell that the Democrats in Congress have given him anything. They should not have accepted a single one of his cabinet nominees. Full court press on this traitor.
