How to set the time ahead on your Apple Watch

There are people (I’m looking at you, my dear wife) who love to set their clocks and watches ahead a few minutes to make sure they won’t be late.

Well, there must be enough of these people, since Apple has baked that capability into the Apple Watch settings. If this appeals to you, or you know someone with that particular bent, read the post for the details.

  1. I think the Apple Watch has always had this feature, or at last has had it since watchOS 2.0 when I bought mine. We live in a strange world where people can’t find the features they need despite obvious placement in the UI. It’s been that way for a while, though. I can remember a number of macOS tips that were obvious. We have a saying “if the user can’t find a feature it’s not there,” but how much more obvious can it be?

(This is not a complaint about you posting the tip, though, as people certainly do need it!)

  2. Odd that doing so doesn’t also override alarms and such. I guess you can set the iPhone time manually and then the Watch will sync that time from the iPhone (maybe?).

  3. I did it for a week without telling my wife. We were suddenly 10 minutes early for everything instead of 5 minutes late. It was nice. Eventually, I told her and I fixed the time and started setting alarms a little earlier.

  4. That makes a lot more sense to me than screwing with my sense of the correct time wherever else I need to be during a day.

  5. plus 3 minutes. It was probably in some F.A.Q. somewhere or in all of the setup guides when AppleWatch was introduced… I had to reestablish it when I upgraded my iPhone in December. But, I did a fresh setup not a ‘backup & restore’.
