Apple is losing a lot of people

A spate of top engineers have left Apple for Tesla and other companies over the last few months. What’s going on?

The moves to Tesla are certainly interesting, but I wouldn’t read too much into the overall trend. Apple gains and loses people all the time and we never hear about it. It’s always been like this.

  1. Even those. 11 years is a long time to be at one place and it’s likely he didn’t want to spend the next 5-10 simply growing Swift but to take on new stuff.

Very few people spend 20-40 years at one company within tech (or, really, anywhere) these days.

PS: because Apple is so secretive we can’t know, too, if Lattner was involved at all in the car stuff there. If he was, was jazzed about it and was bummed about the apparent pullback then Tesla is a natural next step.

  2. Oh, I was wondering what ever happened to Baghdad Bob. I guess he works here now!

  3. Excellent! Now many they can stop drooling over an autonomous iCar and start making computers again!

  4. That’s exactly what I’m afraid of. Avie’s departue maybe didn’t have that much implications, but both OS X and iOS have gone downwards after Bertrand and Scott left.

Jordan Hubbard (one of FreeBSD creators and ex Apple main Unix guy) also.

  5. Ain’t nothing compared to the mind support and users they’re losing. They tightened the budget and stalled product development at the EXACT MOMENT they needed to do the opposite. They’ve lost an entire decade.

  6. Just a out of left field thought, but Musk has always said he doesn’t want to dominate electric car market – just wants to kick start it. Seems to have done that. Tesla software is OK, but Apple’s would be way better. Apple need car manufacturing and it is rumoured they will be making a decision end of this year to pursue the car or not. Despite previous statements could there be an Apple/Tesla merger or purchase around the end of this year being lined up, and these Tesla recruitments from Apple are aligned with that?
