Recode:
If you want to do business in China, you have to play by its rules.
In case U.S. companies needed a reminder, China has served up a bold one in requiring Apple to pull down the New York Times app from its Chinese App Store.
Neither Apple nor China publicly specified what local laws the newspaper was breaking, but Apple said it was notified that the app had run afoul of the country’s rules.
“We have been informed that the app is in violation of local regulations,” Apple spokesman Fred Sainz told the Times. “As a result, the app must be taken down off the China App Store. When this situation changes, the App Store will once again offer the New York Times app for download in China.”
Ignoring Recode’s breathless “showing just how much power that country has over tech firms” (that’s been obvious for a very long time), it does shows who is more important to Apple.
The App Store is soooo 2009.
Make the Open Web Great Again!
I think its because China considers it “fake news”.
Which is good… everyone agrees what “fake news” is.
I think the NYTimes deserves to be formally notified by the PRC government and in turn, disclose to the readers. Was it a single article they have recently published that their government took issues with, or the editors’ perceived general bias against their government/country, or was it something else?
It doesn’t help anybody to have everyone else in the world make “baseless” accusations to cast doubts on either party’s integrity.
I’m not sure it is a question of who is more important. If an app is in violation of a law it isn’t Apple’s place to defy sovereign law. Apple might pull out of country completely, but it is unclear that pulling out of China would force Beijing to change policy (if pulling out of China was even feasible for Apple, which it isn’t). Ultimately it is up to the Chinese people to shape their government policy, not Apple.
“Everyone agrees”
“My opinions are universal.”
“My opinions” are the only ones that matter.
you… do…. understand that i’m mocking the hypocrisy of authoritarian progressives in the US (and Canadia) who use the term “fake news” to shut down discourse in the US by pointing out how even their Holy Writ can be labeled as such?
Right?
because that’s what authoritarian progressives do… notify and explain things to those with the wrong opinions. /s
the level of infantile understanding of how things work in this post is actually amazing.
It is interesting that people still fail to understand that fake news is a problem. I would think pride alone would make them wary of being openly manipulated and used by Macedonian teenagers. It is especially ironic given that it’s mostly the same people who have been openly questioning the legitimate and verifiable news for a decade or more.
Sounds like there are authoritarians everywhere.
Right. Comply, pull out, or get pushed out at China’s leisure. Pick one.
Assuming you’re Apple and you have the belief that iOS is a good thing for people under a totalitarian regime, there isn’t even a tradeoff.
fake news is a real thing dude.
especially with those using bogus terms like authoritarian progressives. i don’t think you words very well.
point made. Much appreciated.
Curious. How is a simple, English phrase “bogus”.
One is a progressive – that’s straight forward.
One demands that everyone agree with their point of view, not through Freedom of Speech enshrined in the 1st Amendment, but using force, threat, mob rule (twitter), etc. That’s authoritarian.
Its just English – a progressive who demands everyone agree with their point of view at all costs (sans the 1st amendment) is an authoritarian progressive.
I wonder – is your name calling (calling it “bogus”) because my description is a little too close to the mark for you? Because if you hadn’t noticed – name calling -which used to be the go-to M.O. for authoritarian progressives (experienced politicians in the political class, the press, Hollywood stars, etc.) – is no longer working. You can call people racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe, all day long now, and it no longer works.
I hope the authoritarian progressives soon move past name calling now that it no longer works and move to backing up their demands with violence. That’s fine. They’re sissies who have spent so long equating words with “violence” that in a real fight, they’ll back down and fall back to debate.
Everyone should be entitled to their opinion and voice… the more progressive authoritarians speak, the more they reveal themselves. And the more they reveal themselves, the more Brexit and Nov 9th-like failures we will see.
Everyone should be free to be themselves, their own culture, and their own country. Why do people want to push the NYT on China anyhow?
trying to make the whole world happy makes no-one happy.
Good point. I wonder if the locals actually want NYTimes there.
China is a very different country than the “western” world, in that a significant portion of citizens are under-educated even to this day. You may recall that majority of Trump supporters are under-educated, low-income individuals, and China has much more of those in rural areas.
If you give everyone a voice, and leave everything to popular vote there today, their majority might just vote for their own version of Trump/Brexit and make things even worse…
