AirBar first look: The Mac finally gets a touch screen

The Wall Street Jorunal:

The Neonode AirBar, announced Tuesday at CES 2017, is a $99 accessory that turns a 13-inch MacBook Air screen into a touch screen. It’s also proof of my longheld suspicion that a touch-screen Mac could be incredibly useful.

Clip the magnetic AirBar to the bottom bezel, plug it into the USB port and that’s it, you can control the screen with your fingers. It doesn’t add a capacitive layer, like on a phone. Instead, the bar projects a field of infrared light that recognizes the location of your finger.

No…just….no….

  1. Contrary to what you think, this is awesome. This is what a Mac user wants when they say, give me a screen to write on so I can annotate a graphic, conduct a meeting or run a remote skype or Citrix session.

No…just…no, is more of the Apple apologist conga line.

The only drawback is the Mac versions costs more than the Windows version.

  2. I thought you were moving to Windows.

And… I never need to write on my screen to run a meeting or do Skype.

  3. I’d imagine running Duet on an iPad would be a better way to have a touchscreen display on a mac. Far less kludgey.

Given that touch screen PCs exist, I doubt that these sell well on the Windows side, for that matter.

  4. I tried a Chromebook Pixel for a couple of weeks. I found it kind of nice to have the touch screen but it wasn’t a big deal for me. If you have a lousy trackpad like many Windows laptops then the screen helps, if you have a great trackpad like the Mac then I find I need it less.

  5. this guy is a troll, been seeing his pattern here.

Jobs and Schiller and Cook would love to sell more stuff, but unlike anonymous trolls they’ve actually tried these devices and know value when they see it (and when they don’t). my MIL had a touch windows machine and it was lame, they never used it.
