The sound of science

Tedium:

The odds are good that someone you know has purchased a Bose Wave radio or music system for a loved one. The odds are much better that you’ve seen the commercials or magazine ads sometime over the past 25 years or so, rolled your eyes at how over-the-top the language was, and continued living your tinny-speaker life. But what if we were missing out on something good? Today, we ponder the Bose Wave, the infomercial’s favorite speaker—a speaker, that, as it turns out, was a Christmas gift of sorts.

This is an interesting article if only for the fact that every audio engineer I’ve ever known (and I’ve known quite a few), hate the way Bose devices sound. They would often say, “No highs, no lows, must be Bose”.

  1. I bought a Bose Wave radio for my wife, she’s always wanted one. If anything, it’s a bit too much base and not enough control over treble and base. But I have to say, overall it’s not too bad for such a small device. I prefer my surround sound Cambridge Soundwork speakers though.

  2. I always wanted to see their car suspension system adopted by the mid-range auto industry, but sadly that hasn’t happened.

  3. Bose is OK. They are a good name, for slightly above average music, yet in this world of lossy music (and some bad recordings) one may see how this might not matter much.

I was just testing my JBL L100Ts on the Interstellar sound track (256kbps/AAC) and the amp/receiver is not the best either – and well even the big 12″ woofers failed a bit, on certain parts – though it did seem to mimic the rattle of the detaching ship, but I’m pretty sure there was extra sound there.

Some day, the tube amps, XLR cables and “real sound” speakers will come.

  4. Audio quality is scientific. How audio makes you feel is subjective. Everyone I know who owns one loves it. Is it correct. Heck no. But, we take one on vacation every year and it sounds great with a cool drink, A Grateful Dead album and a sunny day.
