Some MacBook Pro, MacBook Air & Mac mini models will become obsolete next month, lose Apple repair support

9to5Mac:

Apple will add certain MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini models to its list of vintage and obsolete products starting next month, which means the products will lose official Apple repair support through the company’s retail stores and authorized resellers.

Kicking in on December 31, 2016, the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) and MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011) will become vintage and obsolete in all markets where applicable, while the Mac mini (Early 2009) and MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) will become obsolete worldwide on the same date.

Remember, “obsolete” doesn’t mean “will stop working”.

  1. 5 years is a bit too soon to orphan these things, IMO.

My Dad tried to get his battery replaced a couple of years ago, and they wouldn’t help him at the Apple Store because his computer had recently been declared vintage/obsolete. It wasn’t like he was bringing in a PowerBook 140 – his computer was the first 13″ unibody MBP with the integrated battery; still a useful system today.

  2. Double reminder to those with 2011 MBPs with (sometimes repeatedly) failing dGPUs, get your repairs in before the end of the year. Going to get my fourth(?) logic board tomorrow. :/

  3. As far as I know, the replacement logic boards aren’t any different — they’re just new or refurbished and haven’t failed yet. :/ Last time they replaced the logic board they also replaced the entire case/keyboard/display/hard drive/wifi card, etc all free — it’s essentially a new machine again, but just 5 months later the GPU started failing again. It’s a shame, this machine has been a tank otherwise.
