Six months with CarPlay

Great review of CarPlay from John Vorhees, writing for MacStories. Good and the bad. Interesting that this is one of the few cases where Apple is forced to build a software experience on someone else’s hardware.

  1. I’ve had some of the same experiences, but the HW on my 2016 VW is really fast – I have no issues with the touchscreen lagging, and CarPlay starts up in about five seconds. It seems that about every few weeks on average I’ll have to reboot the car’s infotainment system so that it will connect with CarPlay, but it’s not any more often than that. I had significant Maps problems in iOS 9 – traffic refusing to appear was nearly a showstopper until I discovered that restarting Maps if it had been more than a couple of hours since the last time I used it cleared that problem up – but it has got a lot better in iOS 10 (except it still sometimes loses the track-up setting and reverts to north-up), and in general iOS 10 has fixed all of the stability issues except the aforementioned Maps bug.
