I find this ad to be just offensive. All I can think of is the WASTE of all those (undoubtedly very expensive, “retro”) lightbulbs, the inconvenience of all the people that were kept out of whatever part of town they were blowing up lightbulbs in that morning, and the poor suckers who had to sweep up al the broken glass afterwards. It conveys nothing about the product and is also culturally insensitive in that the whole “lightbulb = idea” thing is an American concept and far from universal. It reads more like a jack-ass stunt than a commercial to me. Worst of all it’s just a horrible message (when you can find a message in it).
You, whining about Apple? I’m SHOCKED. SHOCKED I SAY.
Don’t worry. All the lightbulbs were CGI. (BTW, don’t watch the movie “The Blues Brothers”. They destroyed a LOT of cars.)
Sorry I could give you only one up vote.
But, come on! Who here really thought those were real light bulbs? Maybe he forgot the /s?
What a self-indulgent, silly troll you are.
“lightbulb = idea” American? Damn skippy! Far from universal? Wrong. It most likely IS, just like Apple (American company)!
Great ad! Love the little Asian girl’s expression watching the robot! Never get tired of Willem Tell!
How do we know the light bulbs are CGI?
On its own merits, it’s a cool ad. But is it the right ad to use in a climate when Apple is increasingly, even if incorrectly, seen as arrogant and out of touch?
Because real lightbulbs don’t explode like that, especially not with smoke. There’s nothing in them to “smoke.” Also, even if they did, they wouldn’t ALL explode perfectly on cue in sequence like that. As realistic as they look, their action is too perfect.
Nope. Totally different circumstances. They certainly wouldn’t have used high voltage like that on a location shoot—if it WAS a location shoot. And that wasn’t the same kind of smoke you see in the ad. Also the high voltage in your video jumped across the gap in the BROKEN filament in the bulb.
Thanks for continuing to engage. I’ll leave it there – still unconvinced: CGI is sometimes indistinguishable from real.
My suspicion is that the bulbs were filled with a flammable gas, which was sparked with the filament. Probably only a few were done, with lots of angles getting captured.
Or Thiel. Or Koch. Or Brin. Or Zuckerberg.
I know it’s like when they blew up all those expensive x-wing fighters in Star Wars, I was totally like, I would take one of those.
It’s a real stylistic switch for Apple which I like – and it reminds me of the “Crazy Ones” ad which is still my favourite.
Lately Microsoft has adopted the Apple style and so it’s good to zig while others zag.
He doesn’t. He just doesn’t like what I said and will double and triple down on the hatred until this thread is long dead.
CGI or not (and there is no proof they are CGI), it’s a bad advert, with an awful messaged no one here refutes this really. The way you know this is all the attacks are on me personally, and focusing on the “it’s not real” aspect. Neither of which are really relevant to my main claims.
If they were CGI, why were they all wired up on a unified base (which could easily contain the electronics needed to make them all blow in sequence)? Why not just have bulbs on sticks or bulbs coming out of the ground, or bulbs hovering in mid air?
Fro a dude who started all the personal attacks and piling on in this thread and has no actual facts to back up his angry ideas, you sure are an asshole. Someone doesn’t agree with you so they must have been paid to say it? Seriously?
Does anyone know what motorcycle is shown at 0:28?
“there is no proof they are CGI” No proof they aren’t. 🙂
OK…that’s enough of the name calling. Disagree all you would like but do it respectfully.
Honestly, Amazon has produced the best ad in recent memory.
I’m thinking custom build.
So who’s the name caller here? Kind of telling, I’d say.
Whatever.
Yeah, it’s just easier to blame one of them for everything.
The only thing not really relevant is your post.
In what Universe do you reside where Apple isn’t routinely chastised as “out of touch”? It’s right out of the “Apple Complainer’s Handbook”. They’ve been considered “out of touch” by industry proles since they introduced the mouse.

Ridiculous. Who paid you to say that? Soros?
