I really enjoy Om’s photographs. The fact he has such great things to say about the iPhone 7 camera says a lot, especially considering he has a number of high-end cameras at his disposal.
Om Malik and the iPhone 7 Plus camera
I really enjoy Om’s photographs. The fact he has such great things to say about the iPhone 7 camera says a lot, especially considering he has a number of high-end cameras at his disposal.
According to his blog, Om has one high end camera – the Leica. And with all due respect, he is a mediocre photographer at best. So I’d take his opinion with a grain of salt.
I sold Leica film cameras for many years. They were built by hand and were better than their Japanese (at the time equivalents). But photography is about the photographer, not the gear.
OM makes nice snapshots.
I yet to find a Pro photographer who doesn’t like iPhone 7 camera. The color improvement is huge. The ability to record in RAW is huge. The software is excellent. 2 cameras on + model is great. And the portrait mode in 7+ is just the icing on the cake that put it in special place (for phone camera).
I’ve been in the photography industry for a long time, and worked with many professional photographers, after looking at his work, he is not a mediocre photographer at best. He’s actually pretty good.
Sorry. But I couldn’t disagree more. He is a mediocre photographer. And please, it’s pointless to cite your CV on the internet. The fact that you think his photography is pretty good tells me more about your knowledge of photography than your alleged background.
“photography is about the photographer, not the gear.”
We hear that all the time. Here’s a simple fact: No gear, no photograph. No photographer? You can still take many photographs, and some rather good ones at that.
Gear matters a great deal, and matters even more in the hands of really good photographer.
Final point – a Leica is wasted in Om’s hands. It really is.
Yes, it is a great camera, when compared to most other smartphone cameras and P&S units. But, as good as it is, it cannot do what a good DSLR does in the hands of a really good tog. For those of us who are permanently attached to our fav DSLR or mirrorless, this is an interesting footnote in the history of photography. I am looking forward to the camera of iPhone 10. By then, I think we will have a real contender.
That’s you’re opinion and you are certainly welcome to it.
I could say the same about you, but I won’t, because it’s rude. So I’ll have to agree to disagree with you on this one.
And why not cite my curriculum vitae? I have the experience and I do know about photography.
But, in any case, regardless of experience, it still comes down to a matter of opinion.
how much better can it get in the cell form factor?
what makes today’s camera (any good cell phone camera) remarkable is that it fits in your pocket. i never use my DSLR any more because i hate lugging gear unless its for a special shoot. in this way the goodness of cameras like the iPhone is anything but a historic footnote.
I am quite enjoying the iPhone 7+ camera. Video, portrait, zoom, low light are all a big jump for me. In a nutshell, I’m having fun and shooting a lot more pictures.
Agree that there are limits to improvement in miniature sensors and optics. But there is significant development in computational photography that will emerge in mass marketed products in the next few years. Just you see. 🙂
“But, in any case, regardless of experience, it still comes down to a matter of opinion.”
Hence pointless to cite CV, particularly when anyone can claim anything.
Maybe, but my point was that I’ve been around many accomplished photographers, so I’d like to think I have a somewhat informed opinion. If you don’t believe me or think I’m wrong, obviously that’s fine as I don’t care what you think. We just disagree.
