U.S. to ban all Samsung Note 7 phones on airline flights

I suppose you could see this coming, but I still find the whole thing incredible. Will Apple reap this windfall? Will Google’s new Pixel phone?

  1. Using Branding Brand survey http://blog.brandingbrand.com/news/survey-google-pixel-takes-a-bite-out-of-samsungs-declining-consumer-base as a yardstick:

    30% will buy iPhone
    8% will buy Pixel
2% will buy some other Android phone
60% may or may not buy another Samsung phone.

The problem with Pixel is poor marketing and carrier relationship, and newness of the product. LG is infamous for bootlooping issue and other flagship phone makers just aren’t very popular in the US.

  2. Despite The Verge constantly hyping the Google Pixel and mischaracterizing it as Google “FIRST” attempt to take on the iPhone head-on (i.e.: if we ignore their previous 7 attempts), the Pixel likely won’t sell to many Note 7 owners. Why?

    1) Pixel will be marketed online by Google and in Verizon stores and will not have nearly the distribution of other brands
    2) Pixel is only available in 4 countries
    3) People who buy the Note 7 care about having a “PREMIUM” smartphone. They don’t want to carry a phone that looks like an iPhone knock off.

Many Note 7 buyers will likely switch to the Galaxy S7 Edge — which is a premium smartphone that uses the same interface elements that Note 7 users are accustomed to. It is widely available and proven safe.

Those Note 7 owners who feel “burned” by the Samsung brand, will likely switch to iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. It is the “new hotness” right now and many will use this debacle as an opportunity to “try out” an iPhone. Especially those who moved away from iOS years ago because the screens were only 4-inches.

LG phones are more than capable competitors to Note 7 (I know people who love their V20 or G5), but like Google, the LG brand does not scream “Premium Smartphone”. I don’t think the masses are going to flock to LG or Google branded phones. The masses think of “iPhone” and “Galaxy” as premium brands.

  3. Net result of all this:
    1. 1-digit boost to iPhone sales
    2. Pixel won’t be 100% DOA
    3. HTC might come back from the dead

  4. Agree. Samsung diehards will fall back to the Edge. A few cheapskates will settle for some other Android iPhone clone. The rest will move up to the real iPhone.

  5. I love the Pixel commercials… the white square actually BLOCKS the screen so you can’t see what’s going on… it’s an obstacle.

  6. Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !mj181d:

  7. Google itself is calling Pixel their “First phone by Google”.

(Photos can’t be posted in a disqus reply, but search duckduckgo for “google pixel” and see second result.)

  8. “Will Google’s new Pixel phone?”

It’s never wise to dismiss any competition out of hand, but without a 360º premium customer [service] experience model, like Apple’s, I don’t think Google’s Pixel will gain meaningful ground against the iPhone.

e.g. If a customer has an issue with a smartphone under warranty, Apple Retail Stores represent a clear advantage over dealing with a call center.

  9. “The rest will move up to the real iPhone.”

Agree. Apple might see a slight bump in their already solid “switcher” stats.

But most Samsung customers will be retained (particularly, as a result of Samsung’s promotions, etc, in reaction to this situation).

  10. I was just looking at booking a bus from Vegas to LA and they also warned against their ban transporting a Galaxy Note 7 on the bus!
