When several Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones spontaneously exploded in August, the South Korean company went into overdrive. It urged hundreds of employees to quickly diagnose the problem.
None were able to get a phone to explode.

Samsung, which announced a recall of the Note 7 devices in September, decided to continue shipping new Galaxy Note 7s containing batteries from a different supplier.
As we now know, that approach did not work.
Reports soon surfaced that some of the replacement devices were blowing up too. Company engineers went back to the drawing board, according to a person briefed on the test process who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the internal workings were confidential. As of this week, Samsung’s testers were still unable to reproduce the explosions.
This is a serious blow to Samsung. Trust is everything to a brand.
An editorial in South Korea’s largest newspaper, the Chosun Ilbo, said: “You cannot really calculate the loss of consumer trust in money.”
Just so.
Pretty sure most Samsung customers will prove surprisingly resilient, and very responsive to the inevitable reactionary promotional pricing.
I suspect that the Galaxy Note brand is dead and they will come out with a new brand name on the replacement product. Rebranding is easier then trying to PR against bad publicity.
Of course, the question is why they couldn’t reproduce the issue seen by users. In past iPhone cases, the causes of issues like this is usually linked to cheap power cables from Amazon.
That’s the impression I’m getting from at least one blog’s comments. Kind of tells me what their primary factor was all along.

How many of South Korea’s newspapers, who (if my impression is correct) generally give Samsung a pass because it’s so powerful, are now inclined to be a bit less forgiving of its transgressions?
Really does seem that Samsung does not, even now, understand what the underlying problem is. Which begs the question if they can avoid it happening with the next ‘Goat 8’? or whatever branded phone they come out with.
Samsung made massive organisational changes a while ago – and you can imagine the pressure new management had on them to deliver. Easy to understand that shortcuts were taken…
