Apple’s iOS 10 is now used more than any other version of the operating system. More than half of iOS devices have already upgraded to the latest software, according to new numbers from Apple.
The update is now installed on 54% of devices, according to stats posted on Apple’s developer site. Last year’s iOS 9 accounts for 38% of devices while just 8% of devices are running iOS 8 or earlier.
These numbers are a little below estimates from third parties like analytics firm Mixpanel, which pegs iOS 10 adoption at around 67%. But Apple’s numbers, which rely on App Store visits, are likely more accurate.
“Likely” more accurate?
You know what? This is the worst kind of tech blogging.
Why is everyone updating to iOS 10? You make it sound like it is popular but the reality is there is no choice. If your device is compatible, it bugs you more than once per day until you upgrade. On a mobile device, that is interrupting your work regularly.
I made a technical decision not to upgrade 9.3.5 until I can upgrade to 10.3.5 based on the awful software product quality of the last 3–4 years of Apple software, but on abou the 5th day of being pestered to upgrade, when I was tapping some work the box popped up and I accidentally approved the upgrade without even seeing anything other than the blink of the dialog. Now it pesters me more than once per day to let it install.
AND in the ultimate sin of the tech blogger, you gloss over the problems that come from upgrading 1 BILLION CONSUMERS to an X.0.0 release. My mother-in-law used her 10.0.0 phone to call me for help with bugs. And the rest of the family will soon follow. Apple is 100% at fault for this. Consumers did not sign up for computer lessons with Apple — they bought PHONES.
I’m an Apple customer for 20 years, and I cannot wait to switch to competing gear. Apple today is like what you would have if Apple and Microsoft merged in 1994.
The iPhone was sold as “Apple iPod phone” not “IBM pocket computer.” It is an example of outrageously bad inhumane design to convert it from a consumer electronics device for everyone into a computing device for tech bloggers and other nerds. And then it is much worse to give those 1 BILLION CONSUMERS what is definitively bad I-T advice: update all your devices on the first day from semi-stable 9.3.5 to completely experimental 10.0.0. Yes, even the device that is your main 911 line. Yes, even the device that can’t fail you for a second at work. Yes, even your special needs kid’s device and your mother-in-law and the device that runs your locks and lights at home.
If you are going to be a tech blogger, please consider being on the side of the user, not on the side of the gigantic faceless corporation because that is not the same side right now.
Have to go look at my calendar, see how to fit in the I-T work that Apple has given me as a thank-you for converting my whole family over from Microsoft and Google. What a fucking idiot I was.

Shawn gave no indication of whether an upgrade to 10.0.1 (they skipped 0) was a good thing or not.
As a developer, I give not a single fuck about why people are upgrading. I care only about how many users I lose by targeting iOS 10, balanced with how much developer technology I lose access to by targeting iOS 9.

Early troubles? Like 2 hours when a few people were having problems and they fixed it. Long before they started pushing it out to people.
I wouldn’t quite say 10.0.1 was experimental. A million public beta testers makes iOS pretty stable. Sorry some people have ‘special’ families.
