We’re nearing Apple’s 10-year anniversary of the iPhone, and the device still refuses to recognize common curse words. (Steve Jobs memorably insisted on keeping the iPhone PG-rated.) Damn! But one genius posted a workaround on Twitter that let’s you drop expletives with ease.
In the grand scheme of things, this is a minor problem but it is an incredible annoyance to those of us with foul mouths.
Why not just add the words to the custom dictionary? I even have it flip the correction the other way: “duck” corrects to “fuck”. You don’t need to create a new contact for that.
On my UK phone it doesn’t seem to be a problem! Dunno what that says about us fucking Brits!
Why would you want to have “fuck fucker” in your contacts, maybe even synced to all your devices, when the functionality to get the desired result is right there (and has been for several years) under
Settings -> General -> Keyboards -> Text Replacement
Just add “fuck” etc. as a Phrase, no need to add a Shortcut.
I don’t swear much, but I’ve never added anything to contacts or custom dictionaries and I’ve not had any ducking problems for years. I’d thought this was a fixed issue?

I heard about this workaround back near 2008, I believe, and have had “fuck fucking” as part of my Address Book/Contacts list since then, because I have a foul mouth, too. I might’ve heard about it on Twitter from someone like Merlin Mann. The Gizmodo article here gives credit to “TNTLuoma,” who I vaguely remember as one of the early Twitter adopters.

i hope it’s more brilliant than the age-old “if siri doesn’t understand it, add it to your contact-list”-“hack”. just wanted to say that, before i head over to the site 🙂
This was a day-one iPhone hack, if you recall – you corralled autocorrect by stuffing all your awful words in Notes, and it would stop flagging them.
as noted you can add entries to Text Replacement, for years.
the Text Replacement fix is better since it doesn’t dirty your Contacts
I don’t curse much outside my car, but this seems like a sloppy kludge of a workaround. Text replacement is a little cleaner, but appending your dictionary seems like smartest way to handle a problem with autocorrect.
All my contacts are dirty.
