But calling it a font is a misnomer — as the above video shows, this distinctive style of handwriting is an aesthetic shaped by culture, technology, and really cheap paper.

That Ames lettering guide was used by draftsmen before it was used by comic-book letterers. Comics lettering is a less-formal descendant of the style of lettering used for drafting engineering and architectural diagrams.
