Tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Thursday it is acquiring U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) platform developer Viv Labs Inc, a firm run by a co-creator of Apple Inc’s Siri voice assistant program.
Samsung said in a statement it plans to integrate the San Jose-based company’s AI platform, called Viv, into the Galaxy smartphones and expand voice-assistant services to home appliances and wearable technology devices.
Viv looks to be a pretty robust system. Impressive move.

I disagree. If Viv was so potentially big then why did they sell it and potentially lose the Apple half of their future market? Do you think Samsung will really let them develop an app for non-Samsung phones?
It was demoed but nothing in real life yet and wait to be seen how good it is, kind of reminded me of the glowing report on the google hub or something which was a fail but perform great in demo.
The inventor of Viv is smart he demoed it I believe looking for a buyer and well a fish was caught, a very smart move by the inventor.
Interesting. Probably a necessary acquisition given the way Google just screwed their OEMs yesterday. Samsung can’t really depend on Google sharing tech.
Felt for a while the Samsung’s future is Sony’s present but this could differentiate their products across the many categories Samsung does business in — tv, audio, appliances, wearables.
Still comes down to Samsung’s ability to do software and UI integration.
Also, what happens in 18-24 months when the Viv principals inevitably split to start yet another AI/IA company?

it seems unlikely to me that they have the capability to either support or deploy this in any credible way. They are very far from a being a big data company and as long as they are using Android there will be a more powerful alternative AI on all their devices. Like Samsung Pay, it just seems a silly copycat move to me.
