The gradual death of the third-gen Apple TV is continuing this evening, as Apple has officially discontinued the device. In an email sent out today to employees and education partners, obtained by 9to5Mac, Apple confirmed that it is discontinuing the device, shifting its focus entirely to the fourth-gen, tvOS-powered model and possibly a new model.
I have a third-gen Apple TV and it still works well. Perfect solution to add Netflix, Hulu, etc. to a lower-use TV. If I could get another one at a heavily discounted price, I’d snap it up in a heartbeat.
Makes sense given the app store is only available on tvOS. It’s a bit confusing having the two generations existing with such fundamental differences.
It lasted longer than I thought it would.
I’ve got two of them, and I quite like them, but I can’t wait to get at least one new one.
I use my ATV3 to drive an external 2nd monitor via Airplay. It was a nice run, but the new ATV4 has apps that I want (Sling, Music) that simply aren’t ever coming to the 3. I’m tempted to get another 3 to drive a TV in the bedroom but I suppose I can always get one used.
ATV3s seem to sometimes make it to open box stores at big discounts, too.

On tuesday I got a great new Land Rover Range Rover from having earned $8752 this last four weeks.. Its the most-financialy rewarding I’ve had.. It sounds unbelievable but you wont forgive yourself if you don’t check it
