Safari home page changing to Apple start page

When I fired up my Mac this morning, my Safari home page had changed to Apple’s start page. I asked around and this appears to be happening to other folks as well.

This is certainly good marketing for Apple, as every new Safari page opens as an ad for iPhone 7, Apple Watch, etc. But I set my home page up the way I wanted it. Not sure if this is an intentional move on Apple’s part or, perhaps, just a bug, a reset of the home page. But it happened without my installing anything new on my computer. And it is happening to others, though not to everyone.

If this happened to you, please ping me on Twitter.

Interesting.

  1. Don’t think so, don’t see the update in my App Store update list, but here’s my version info:

    Version 10.0.1 (12602.2.7)

  2. This hasn’t happened to me but I’m not surprised. Apple has been doing this stuff a lot lately. They continue to have an advertisement for Beats Radio 1 when you force-click the iTunes icon in iOS for example. Every time you open the App Store on OS X, it goes to the main page with the adverts, even if the reason you clicked it was to get at the updates. Every installation of OS X resets your web security preferences for downloads and has to be changed back manually. Every time you open the music app it switches to the page for Apple Music, even when you don’t have it installed. Every re-install of iOS presents the user with an advert for Apple Music on opening the app for the first time, etc. etc. And this is not an exhaustive list either. This is the “New Apple.” Ads, ads everywhere.

  3. Mine hasn’t been changed, but it doesn’t matter either because I always have open tabs up and Safari remembers them. Sure you didn’t accidentally hit a wrong keyboard shortcut?

  4. I’ve seen none of that. Whether I need to add “yet” or not is another thing, but I literally just opened my Music app and it opened on my Library and not the Apple Music advertisement. I’m on an iPhone 6 using iOS 10.0.2. I am not subscribed to Apple Music. I used the Mac iTunes App last night several times and it did not open to the Apple Music page. I have not updated to Sierra yet, and I am not subscribed to Apple Music.

So, I’m not really buying this. There may be a bug, but it doesn’t seem indicative of any kind of ads, ads everywhere policy. (I don’t consider ads after a fresh install to be anything but what it is: something that pops up once because it assumes you are brand new and then it goes away.)

  5. Bit off topic (other than Poltergeists).. but out of the blue everything on my desktop disappeared. Took a bit to figure out but somehow the iCloud preference Desktop & Documents Folder was now unchecked. I didn’t do it. Checking that again and everything came back. If that’s a bug (I am on the beta program), it’s a very disconcerting one.

  6. I have mine set to Google News, and once before at some random time it “reset” to Apple’s homepage. I don’t think it’s intentional, more likely a corrupt preference or something. Likewise, just a few days ago a couple of my System Preferences changed back to defaults (sidebar icon/text size, dark menubar went back to light). It happens.

  7. This has happened to me twice since I upgraded to the Sierra operating system. I have awakened to find my Safari homepage changed to show the Apple website instead of the one I had set. This is disconcerting and is a violation. I don’t know how to stop it. I may have to call Apple Care to find a solution. I’m glad I’m not the only one. Thanks for posting your comment.

  8. Hi Lady Arrabella…did you call Apple Care in the end? This keeps happening to me and although the fix is minor, the effect is very annoying!

  9. Jeff – I spoke to an Apple Care tech and he logged my complaint. This problem makes me hesitant to authorize updates but in the end I know that I need to do it. Fortunately the changing of my Safari home page hasn’t happened recently. Good luck.
