DarkSky, your favorite iPhone weather app, is now a website

Mashable:

DarkSky, the popular iPhone and Android weather app with dazzling graphics and hyper-specific forecasts, has made a transition onto your desktop.

The company launched DarkSky.net earlier this month in an effort to bring its design philosophy and forecasting prowess to a broader audience. Like the app, the website features local forecasts presented in a deterministic way, meaning it will tell you when it will rain, rather than a probability of precipitation.

As a motorcyclist, especially this time of year, the weather dictates where and when I ride so having tools like the excellent DarkSky is really important.

  1. They launched forecast.io a couple years ago and it appears, more than anything, that they are rebranding it to DarkSky.net to mirror the name of their app. Having used both the app and the website, I can see why they would migrate the website over to the same brand to reduce confusion.

What confuses me is why sites are treating this as anything more than a rebranding effort. Did they not realize forecast.io exists?

  2. Yup, I like this app. It’s not the only weather app I use. But it’s handy and well designed.

Electric grips, gloves, vest, and a good quality riding suit, should address anything but snow.

  4. There is/was an app called Forecast that culled data from forecast.io in Canada, I’ve had it installed for years and it works great. The data is there, I don’t get why the app isn’t in the store.

  5. Hells yes! And I live in an area where, while it doesn’t snow very often, is pretty hilly and mountainous so black ice can hide throughout the day. 🙁 So I only winter ride when the temps are above 5 C and even then, only on the main, well travelled roads.

  6. While I purchased DarkSky long ago and keep it on my phone, it’s forecasts are really hit-and-miss. I stumbled upon the following website though that’s really helped out: http://www.forecastadvisor.com

It tells you the accuracy of various online weather sources for your area. I’ve found it really helpful.

  7. Living in Florida, the Dark Sky app is a must-have as it’ll suddenly start monsooning in your front yard while your backyard is a sunny paradise. It’s brilliant and incredibly helpful.
