This is the most bizarre situation I’ve come across in a long time. A reporter at The Verge working for Apple at the same time and neither seemed to know. I agree with Gruber–something doesn’t add up here.
Apple, Ziegler, and The Verge

minor HR issues don’t interest me.
Well maybe Ziegler didn’t earn enough money at The Verge.
How much do “journalists” make any more?
Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !mj286d:

He may well have been under NDA with Apple and felt like his hands were tied, however bad it looks from a journalism POV. But he could have said something…
Having worked for Apple (long ago), one of the questions they ask is, “Do you have any outside employment or interests that might conflict with your work here at Apple?”
Yeah. And probably standard for any large enterprise too. … I was trying to envision a charitable explanation.
It’s also highly unlikely that Apple did not know his current employer.
This sounds like something else to me. I’m looking forward to hearing more details.
The Verge was vague, while trying to sound virtuous, in their revelation. What does “working for Apple” mean? Gruber has insiders telling him that Ziegler is not in the company director. So he is either (i) working on a secret project; (ii) working as a contractor; (iii) working in retail.
The Verge noted that they verified his employment at Apple. So it’s entirely likely that he was employed at Apple and then fired after the Verge reached out.
