In recent weeks, Apple has been sending out surveys to users asking about MacBook Pro features, most notably the headphone jack. A survey question shared by MacRumors reader Blake asks “Do you ever use the headphone port on your MacBook Pro with Retina display?”
There are several other reports on Twitter from users who have been asked similar questions about the headphone jack, suggesting Apple is exploring the removal of the headphone jack in a future version of the MacBook Pro.
If there is a MacBook Pro update coming this year, I suspect it will have a headphone jack. This sort of market research would typically be done during the design phase, not in preparation for product rollout. I suspect the headphone jack will, ultimately, go away, as wireless becomes the standard. On the iPhone 7, waterproofing and case real estate are often quoted as two driving reasons for the removal of the headphone jack. Neither of these is a big issue for the MacBook Pro.
Apple doing user surveys? Hmmm … I’d be suspicious that this is some kind of phishing scam by someone else. 😉
Let’s move away from what user needs are to the realm of marketing survey which don’t
take into account what the machine is actually used for.

Came here to say just that. This sounds more like the action of a third party or a news site (or, as you suggest, a scam).
That jack is a part that has failed on 2 Mac’s I’ve owned, fixed under AppleCare. They both worked ok if you jiggled the connector. Just another fail point Apple is looking to get rid of.
If the MacBook Pro revision ships with a headphone jack I will chalk it up as another small sign that things are slowly eroding at Cupertino.
They made a choice to ditch the jack and they should own it. The new MacBook Pro should come with a lightening port and the 9 dollar dongle.
I also have to say that the rumors regarding the ports on the new MBP really disappoint me. If it ships with only USB-C it will mean that Apple’s leading computer and it’s leading phone can not be connected without an adapter. That is madening to me.
I also hate the idea that they will remove mag safe in favor of an inferior USB-C solution. Mag Safe personified the MacBook Pro. The continuous revision and improvement that made it the best laptop in the world.
This, however, is a Pro work machine, where wireless audio with a compressed data stream would not be a welcome standard at all. I’d like to keep that jack for now, or at least until Apple’s “W2” includes an option for lossless audio.
On my last MBP, I used wireless headphones. It was glorious. Before I went all Mac, I’d never thought about using wireless keyboards or mice and then I got my first iMac. I’ll never go back to wired and can’t wait for the Air Pods. I’ve never been able to find in-ear wireless headphones I like but I love the Ear Pods so I’m sure I’ll like the wireless version. The idea of leaving them in my ears and seamlessly (fingers crossed…) moving from device to device…I think they call that “nirvana.”

but being a pro work machine might be a point in favor of a digital and potentially powered connector. something via USB or thunderbolt or even perhaps a newly added lighting port.
When I’m in the studio, yes, absolutely. I’m talking about working while on the go, which is what the MBP is all about. I don’t want to have anything hanging off of the computer that’s not necessary.

I’m sure video people could have made similar case when they ditched the DVD drive.
Why are you sure? The optical drive had nothing to do with actual work in progress. I am one of these “video people” on occasion, and I can still edit video without it just fine. Yank easy audio, however, and there’d be a problem, unless (as I said) there is another solution on the horizon.
Sorry, it’s a bit off topic, but I am currently involved in a heated discussion over here in Germany, and I am searching for an answer everywhere: What is the lightning to 3.5mm adapter really doing? Does it contain its own dac? Or is it passing through some analog signal? This seems to be totally absurd and backwards, but a lot of people seem to think so, even DED.
Up to now, there seems to be no teardown on the net.
