Chris Messina:
Apple doesn’t give a shit about neckbeard hipsters who spent thousands of dollars on expensive audiophile gear that rely on 100-year-old technology to transmit audio signals. They’ll readily drop them faster than Trump drops facts to make an argument in a televised debate.
Apple is securing its future, and to do that, it must continue to shrink the physical distance between its products and its customers’ conceptions of self. The ᴡᴀᴛᴄʜ came first, busting our sidekick supercomputer out of our pockets and onto our skin. Apple’s next move will put its products literally within earshot of our minds.
This is no accident.
Good, funny read about the perception of Apple’s new AirPods.
Tom Coates thoroughly disagrees. So Chris must be onto something.
I totally agree wit this article. Apple is sneaking in the next wave of wearables, the next level of “intimacy” with a device.
At first I was wondering why they left off any type of control for volume and track, other than siri. Certainly they could have put in SOME sort of “volume up” tap, or something like that.
Now I realize the reason they didn’t is the same reason that the original mac didn’t have any keyboard shortcuts… to FORCE YOU to use the new technology.
No keyboard shortcuts, you were using the mouse.
No “tap-to-change-volume,” you are using Siri.
And that’s how those behaviors become normalized.
A pile of pompous blather in my opinion. Can’t believe I read the whole thing!
Trying to call Apple Air Pods and Apple non-technology is profoundly ignorant and glib.
Trying to say the sky is falling in the future smacks of superstition, and more fundamentally, stupidity.

i thought Jim pointed out that the double-tap to invoke siri can also be set for play/pause? that it operated as such on the AW..

Completely quoting another person’s article is considered writing?

It wasn’t “completely quoted”. It was an excerpt. And every byline on The Loop has always been written that way. Sorry you hadn’t noticed up until now.
“Apple doesn’t give a shit about neckbeard hipsters who spent thousands of dollars on expensive audiophile gear”
We know Apple does give a shit about the majority of its users, but the free adapter in the box indicates that Apple’s thinking of all users, including audiophiles who bring their own.
It’s a pretty safe bet that Apple did a little research and determined that something like +/- 90pc of iPhone customers only use the earphones supplied with their iPhone. The adapter covers the other 10pc, whatever the reason someone might use it.
I meant the entire “article” is a giant quote. “Sorry”.
And I hadn’t “noticed” that until now because “fortunately” this was my first and last experience with “The Loop”.
