Martin Hajek:
What if Apple had done the new AirPods in black too?
I modelled these earphones and rendered them in brand-new iPhone gloss black. You can’t buy these for real but you can download the 3D model of these AirPods.
Hajek screams in his piece, “SO WHY DID THIS NOT HAPPEN?” There are any number of reasons, most likely for simplicity’s sake in their first iteration. If they prove to be popular (and, even though I won’t be buying them, I think they will be), we’ll see colour matched AirPods in their next version. But, then again, there are no black EarPods so maybe we’ll never see them.
I believe my words were ‘Oh fuck, this needs to happen now!’
Yeah it is beautiful but we all know Apple doesn’t just “make” stuff. Right now I’m contemplating an annual turkey extravaganza that I will probably enjoy before my Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus delivers because it’s not being made. It’s being crafted.
Imagine the “easy to lose”memes.
One reason maybe the ability to see, well… ear wax and smudges too easily?
The visibility of white earbuds has been valuable since the first iPod.

Um, AirPods are plastic. The Jet Black iPhone is aluminum. White headphones are a signature Apple thing.
Apple can do black when it wants to.

Apple considers the white earphone to be sort of a trademark because that distinguished the iPod from the black earphones of the Walkman. So it is unlikely it is an oversight or coming-soon. The AirPods are probably very deliberately iPod-white.
Also the jet black iPhone 7 is aluminum, not plastic. The EarPods are plastic and made to be as lightweight as possible. They would never precisely match the iPhone 7.
Sure, why not? Maybe gold and rose gold AirPods, too. And why not silver?
White earbuds are not there to match the silver iPhone, but as part of Apple’s design.
Except Apple did once make a black Bluetooth earbud. Roughly the same time as the first iPhone, if memory serves.
I’m waiting for my lime green Nike AirPods.
This is the correct answer. White is the way to go because it started from the original iPod and by brand association it’s going to stay that way. There’s a reason why when you think of Ferrari it’s usually red, even though other colors are available.
Removing the headphone jack to us all on a trajectory, so I would have liked to see Apple ‘swing for the fences’ on this initiative, and have black and possibly more colors. I mean its not as if they lack the financing and black plastic is fairly easy to come by.
Offering more colors is not swinging for the fences. It would be doing what other manufacturers do.
Jet black is not just about how it looks. It’s about how it feels. People too often mistake Apple’s design ethos to be only about looks. The AirPods are plastic. They cannot be made to either feel or look like the body of the jet black iPhone.
and you know that black BT ear piece matches the jet black aluminum iphone 7 finish how…?
One color is Apple just testing the waters when they’ve fully committed to no headphone jack. And as I recall, Apple has been making multi-colored devices for years.. I don’t understand their ultra conservative strategy here.
BTW, I’m likely to buy white in any event, but black would be cool too.
I’m trying to imagine anyone ever having this sort of conversation about a Dell product.
