Apple confirms there was an iOS 10 glitch, but says the issue is resolved for those now downloading

Recode:

Apple says it has identified and fixed a bug that caused some people to have their phones and tablets rendered unusable after updating to iOS 10.

“We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability,” an Apple representative told Recode. “The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers. Anyone who was affected should connect to iTunes to complete the update or contact AppleCare for help.”

It wouldn’t be Update Day without some issues that affect a small percentage of users. It brings home the point I’m constantly having to make – don’t update your device OS unless you have a recent backup of it.

  1. …and do yourself a favor, and locate/review instructions for downgrading to iOS 9.3.5 in case of emergency / before the previous version is no longer available. I used the public beta for a few months on my iPadAir2, including the “release candidate,” which claimed to be iOS 10.0.1, and then ended up reverting back to iOS 9.3.5 this past weekend. The biggest issues I had were an inability to charge off my USB hub (a decent brand – works fine now that I’m back on iOS 9), and an inability to update apps on the first try (usually needed several attempts, and a complete restart).

As always, upgrade with caution. A long beta/public beta period doesn’t mean that all of the bugs have been squashed.

  2. Boo. I usually wait a few days but the big beta gave me false security. My iPad Mini 2 is still working through iTunes after freezing during the update. (and the iTunes has failed, too)
