Adblock Plus is now going to sell ads

Gizmodo:

Adblock Plus, one of the web’s most popular ad-blocking services, will soon begin selling its own ads—and taking a little bit of the cut as well. Seems counterintuitive, huh?

But it’s not entirely surprising. Adblock Plus has been positioning itself for a long time as a kind of online advertising firm. The company is now just making concrete what was originally read-between-the-lines ambiguous.

This was sadly predictable.

  1. The advertisers themselves deserve some of the blame here. If they didn’t make obnoxious, offensive ads that frequently block functionality of the page being visited, then people would not have turned to ad blockers the way they have. At least this sets some guidelines for what is acceptable.

  2. Back in my college, my friends speculated about building a jukebox for rowdy bars: 10 cents to hear your song, 20 cents to hear it played louder, and 50 cents to make it stop instantly. We figured it would be a viable business model until it got someone killed. The AdBlock plan sounds eerily familiar.

  3. I saw this on Twitter:

    (Then)

    Users: Please DoNotTrack me

    AdTech+Publishers: Screw you

    (Now)

    AdTech+Publishers: Please DoNotAdBlock me

    Users: Screw you

  4. They’re maybe thinking that if they use the right kind of low key ads, it’ll be alright. But… I think the people using Adblock Plus are the same people least likely to accept this or any kind of ads.
