All cameras are good cameras

The Wire Cutter:

I’ve been a photographer since the days of film and have reviewed cameras for a living since 2010. I’m very confident in saying that under normal daylight conditions, just about any camera made within the last eight years or so can take a fantastic picture. Now that doesn’t mean your vacation snapshot is going up on a museum wall; a great photograph owes more to the photographer’s vision, preparation, and anticipation than to the camera used to capture it. But from purely technical standpoints like the ability to focus accurately, generate a pleasing exposure, and reproduce the hues and tones you see in front of you, it’s impossible to find anything on a camera-store shelf that fails to deliver the goods in favorable lighting.

I tell my students to not worry about the camera they have. Anything bought in the last five years will be a good camera. Learn how to take pictures, how to create images and learn what you like to shoot. Then worry about buying a camera that fits.

  1. Crafting a good photograph involves tapping one’s life experiences and imagination, seeing, understanding light, and ultimately creating a composition that ideally releases narrative in a viewer’s mind.

It has so little to do with gear.

  2. Some of my favourite and best photos have been made with an iPhone 4S. Similarly, I take a lot of snapshots with my iPhone SE. I just love having a small and capable camera wherever I go.

That said, I appreciate the artistic freedom and process of taking pictures with my Fujifilm X-Pro2. But that’s about it. I don’t think it makes me a better photographer.

  3. Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !mj381d:

  4. Learn how to take pictures by…taking pictures.

LOTS and LOTS of pictures. 99% of your pictures will be bad/boring/poorly framed/oddly focused/annoyingly mistimed.

That ratio will never change, but they will overall become less bad/not nearly as boring/better focused/more usably framed/less mistimed.

The greatest thing that digital photography has done for the world is reduce the cost of a photograph to nearly zero.

The second greatest thing is that it lets you get instant feedback on your photos.

The third greatest thing it has done is the selfie.

One of those things is a lie 🙂

  5. I have to agree, but with a caveat. I have a life-long interest in things relating to the USN. Reviewing some wartime (WW2) photos, I ran across some in color and BW by Carl Mydans for LIFE magazine. I stand in awe of his work because of his focus on image presentation, tonal balance, and POV relating to content. I have had to reconsider everything I ever thought about composition. Reviewing the work of the journalistic greats has brought me great satisfaction in discovering my own education in learning from them. Those were cameras we do not use anymore, but the results are superb. I suppose Mydans might have used the iPhone and other modern cameras to great advantage back then, but it is what he did with what he had that makes the difference to me.
