Ars Technica:
Apple will release the final version of macOS 10.12 Sierra to the public on September 20th. The company made the announcement on its web site during its September product event today.
Aside from being called “macOS” now, Sierra brings a handful of big new features and a longer list of minor tweaks. We covered most of that ground in our preview of the developer build of the software but the short list includes Siri, proximity-based Apple Watch unlocking, Apple Pay on the web, and more.
For a guy like me who sits in front of a computer all day, every day, this is a bigger and more interesting deal to me than the new hardware announced today.
Auto Unlock with Watch is a great feature. It works only if you’re within about 1 meter of the Mac you’re unlocking, for added security.
Also looking forward to Pay on the web. But, frankly, anything on or about browsers bores me to tears these days. Browsers are so 1994.
Looks great. That and the waterproofness of the series 2 watch are very tempting. I might finally spring for an Apple Watch. But I can’t take advantage of it, sitting here typing on my 2010 MBP. Last Spring they gave such a trivial update to the MBP that I felt sure they were about to do a real update in the Fall. Here we are, over a year later, and the MBP continues to languish. But of course Mr D wrote that nice piece saying we’re spoiled if we get frustrated by the waiting… so obviously I can’t be frustrated or anything…
MBP will be updated before the end of this year.
I used to be so into iPhone announcements, not anymore, I am waiting to see what happens with the Mac. I have to agree with you Shawn.
Your current MacBook is about six years old, right?
If you really need to replace it, you should stop worrying about what’s coming next. If you don’t need to replace it, by all means wait and see.
It’s when you get torn between these choices that you get frustrated at waiting. So pick a stance and live with it.
Personally, I’d definitely wait until the end of the year. If you’re still managing to survive with your MacBook, it’s hard to believe the next few months will matter.
I hope so.
“End of the year” means mid-Oct at the latest. They never release stuff closer to Christmas than that.
An added bonus to waiting is that the current stock of MacBooks will be cheaper, so unless the just-announced models have some feature that you MUST have, you can get a pretty good deal.
I hope so. Seems like there’s been rumblings that we might have to wait until early 2017 to get the new 45W processors.
Drop $3k on a laptop whose processor is 2 years old, and whose form factor is even older, but the prices are still premium, when an entirely new laptop with new form factor and Thunderbolt3 is a few months away. Great advice.
Didn’t tell you what to do. I just told you to get off the fence because that’s the source of your frustration. Make up your mind.
Although if they’re updated quickly enough, you can probably get money back for asking.
