How Apple does camera

Rene Ritchie:

The iPhone 7 may take a leap forward when it comes to pocket photography, with rumors of a dual-lens assembly, better low-light, and an event invitation that hints at significant depth-of field effects.

We’ll get all the details next Wednesday, but there’s one aspect we can take for granted right now: The type of photography Apple is going to focus on.

Pundits keep trying to say that the iPhone will take over from the DSLR. That’s ridiculous. But the iPhone continues to be a very capable camera for the vast majority of people. Apple will make it even better on Wednesday.

  1. According to people familiar with the matter, I kind of miss my point-and-shoot, but not as much as I used to.

  2. It is important to keep in mind that when Apple introduces their new iPhones on Wednesday, with the new photography abilities, it will not simply be that they added a new camera lens (or two) to the phone. Apple has been leading the way on smartphone photography for years now. If it were just about hardware, then why haven’t other manufacturers been able to keep up with them? It is simple. The camera hardware is only one piece of the puzzle. The other two pieces are the AX chipset and the processing software.

I have a Sony mirrorless camera that should be leaps and bounds ahead of my iPhone camera. Now don’t get me wrong, it has the ability to take much nicer photos in certain conditions and with the right lens. However, it is a joke watching this stand-alone, quite nice handheld camera attempt to take an HDR photo. If I turn on the HDR setting, I can sit there and watch as it processes that photo and saves it to the memory card. My iPhone 6s Plus takes an HDR photo in the same time that it takes regular photos. It happens instantly. There is no waiting for processing because the A9 can run circles around the processor in my Sony. Sure, my Sony has a much bigger sensor, and it can change lenses, which are exactly the two reasons I own it in addition to my iPhone. But in well lit, everyday photos, the iPhone kicks ass.

Because Apple writes the OS and designs the AX processor, and photography is so important to them, these both include abilities to take and process photos in order to produce the absolute best results possible with the camera hardware they build into the phone. No other cell phone maker can say that.

  3. “Pundits keep trying to say that the iPhone will take over from the DSLR. That’s ridiculous” No, the ridiculous things is interpreting what’s being said as that. No one’s saying that, Only that DSLRs aren’t going to be less necessary. For example, I often read that people are taking less and less their DSLRs on vacations. So, the use cases for them will eventually reduce to almost pro-only.

  5. I’m a photographer and an iPhone user and lover. For me, the physical controls of a dedicated camera make it better in most cases. I dumped my DSLR kit long ago for smaller, mirrorless and point and shoot cameras but the iPhone hasn’t impacted my need for physical controls.

Apple could give me all the same controls in software and the same IQ but I’d still choose a camera with real knobs and buttons, they’re simply easier for me to use. And, I shoot in winter with glove liners on… the iPhone’s screen, even with thing gloves with special tips on them for multi-touch screens is just too cumbersome to use for me.

Also, smaller isn’t always better in the photo world. Note that people into higher end still and video photography who are using the iPhone are mounting it on a larger “rig” to hold it steady. Cameras with a bit more size and weight are easier to hold steady without mounting on said rig and once you put the iPhone on the rig you’re eliminating the small size advantage.

As a long time Apple user and stockholder, I’m delighted that the iPhone is having an impact on photography, it’s just not having an impact on mine (although it’s my wife’s only camera).

  6. DSLR’s will be for camera snobs and -properly genuine- pro’s.

Ex-pro’s like me (and my shoulders) are loving the iPhone camera and hugely looking forward to what’s coming next…

  7. Im just guessing, and have absolutely no research to base my statement, but I really think 80% of the DSLR users are wannabes and have their kit in full automatic mode, saves the images as RAW, fiddles the heck out of them, not because they really know what to do, but because they saw some dude do it on youtube.

  8. You know how you portray yourself with that kind of attitude? You could just provided a link, but instead you show yourself as a complete asshole. I used to visit the loop for some actual thought through comments, but hey, you probably dont need readers, right?

  9. What attitude? Sorry but I have no idea what you are talking about. You asked me to show you something. I did. Not sure what “attitude” you’re referring to or why me doing what you asked makes me an asshole. I did provide you a link. I’m honestly not sure what you’re getting bent out of shape over.

  10. Eh, I did not ask anything. You clearly do not read the posts, just come to your own conclusions, dont you? I can see who is getting bent out of shape, and thats not me.

  11. Are you telling me there aren’t lousy photographers wielding expensive DSLR kit? Come on…

  12. Fine. I mixed you up with someone else. My apologies. Regardless, someone asked me to provide a link to what I said. I did. You then jumped in to accuse me of having an attitude and call me an asshole for no readily apparent reason.

  13. Yeah, putting a Google query in that website is douchebagish. And the query leads to one article, and a bunch of reposts of that same article, not exactly what you said.

  14. and why wouldn’t a mobile-camera take over from the dslr? granted, dlsrs or professional cameras (eventually that mirror will vanish) will probably be in another place by then, but there is no reason why a few small sensors and a little (or a little more) computation should not at least produce the image quality (meaning: advantages of a large sensor, large sensor pixel size, different & expensive lenses) of a contemporary dslr.

i’d even say that, when computational photography really takes off, it will be on smartphones first – but you can also see signs of it in the pro/prosumer market now (e.g. the dual pixel raw function of the new 5D)

  15. you love to troll but you never learn. iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone nor iPod the first MP3 player. they just did the job better.

go use HTC Duo if you think it’s so great. but you won’t.

  16. Yeah, that “let me google that for you” link is douchebagish. also, as you mentioned, that’s only one article. A THREE YEARS OLD article, by the way.

  17. If this person really wanted to enlighten, and not just be an arse, he would have linked to multiple recent articles. Instead he is calling a respected member of the community a “pundit”. As a result of this, he officially excluded himself from the community, and has absolutely no credibility anymore. Jim and Dave should kick this wannabe from the site before he drags it even more down.

And before this person accuses me again for getting bent, Ill clarify: I tried once as a pre-teen, but when I found out I could not suck myself, I didn’t care to bend no more…

  18. “Instead he is calling a respected member of the community a “pundit” ” I did no such thing.

“he has officially excluded himself from the community” What community are you referring to?

“He does look a bit like an ape” Name calling really doesn’t help your case.

  19. Well, your own ramblings once more. Do you really write stuff without thinking? Or are you just that forgetful, almost as if you should have Alzheimers?

You excluded yourself from the community thats your target group. Those who are more than average interested in tech and Apple.

I do not need to make any case, you made it yourself. And regarding the ape comment, it does have some resemblance I think. Or at least you try really hard to look cool, but you dont, you try to write like you are someone, but you dont. Its just copy paste stuff from others, without any respect for the work they do.

A fucked up know-it-all, a wannabe, yeah, thats better. Sorry for calling you an ape.

  20. OK. That’s enough name calling. If you have a problem with someone, have your disagreement in a civil, respectful way. There’s no place here for personal insults.

  21. Ok, lets be civilised for a moment.

Respect is not something you can demand, that is something thats earned. And your scribbling, as well as your infantile “go Google” behaviour is so far from earning respect as its possible to come.

So, let me quote your own words: “Pundits keep trying to say that the iPhone will take over from the DSLR.” This comes directly after writing “Rene Ritchie”, and then quoting something he wrote. He wrote NOTHING about DSLRs, in fact, DSLRs are not mentioned even ONCE in his writeup.

You make a clear statement that someone, while quoting someone, is trying to say something they are NOT saying. Does this compute?

So, someone in the forum actually called you out on this bullshit, and asks for some links to those articles written by all those pundits. And you present him with a go-Google-yourself-link that points to an old article from years ago, and some lousy reposts of said article. Really?!?

If it looks like a pile of crap, if it stinks like a pile of crap, then its probably a pile of crap.

So, thats why you deserve absolutely ZERO respect, you made a complete fool of yourself, and come over as a big douchenozzle. Thats why I think you should go fuck yourself or something like that.

  22. “lets be civilized for a moment.” OK.

“come over as a big douchenozzle. Thats why I think you should go fuck yourself…” Well, that didn’t last long.

  23. No matter how good the lens(es) get(s), the iPhone will never be as natural or as responsive as a DSLR. For me, anyway. Tapping on a screen or pushing a volume button, on a slab-shaped device, will never have the ergonomics for easy high-performance photography.

Having said that, I’m extremely happy that Apple keeps advancing the iPhone’s camera technology. Because no, I don’t carry my (11+ year old) DSLR around with me every day. I did get a compact Leica D-LUX this year, and even that has better ergonomics and responsiveness than my iPhone 6S Plus. I’ll use it whether or not my iPhone 7 Plus has a better camera.

Fingers crossed that the iPhone 7 and/or 7 Plus will have an f/1.4 lens. For shallower depth-of-field. (Greater “bokeh.”) And also for better low-light sensitivity.
