Atlas Obscura:
The greatest gimmick of all time might have been the creation of light beer—a swill that is widely derided by snobs like me, but nonetheless defines the modern beer industry.
These days, light beers make up seven of the 10 most popular brands of U.S. beer, with Bud Light far outpacing everyone else. It probably says a lot about light beer that the man widely considered the inventor of low-calorie swill was a biochemist.
I’m one of those beer snobs. I’ve never had a “Lite” beer that was worth the price.
I prefer to think of light beer as a relatively ineffective glass cleaner.
What are some of your favourites Shawn?
Usually anything local and craft brewed. But I’d never turn down a Harp. 🙂
I don’t do light anything. I rather exercise daily but eat and drink good stuff. To me light is truly a gimmick to sucker people into consuming things that they perceive as a healthier choice. In most cases, they are not.
If I’m ever up your way I’ll keep that in mind!
; )
If you get a chance, try a Belgian if you never have.
Westmalle in particular is a great one.

One of these days we’ve got to put together a “Loop” gathering.. wouldn’t that be fun.
Especially with some of the people having been chatting since Macworld forums!
Oh, I’ve had gallons of Belgian beer. 🙂
And I’ve been trying to get Dalrymple to do a “Loop Gathering” for years. He doesn’t want to. I don’t think he actually wants to meet most of you…. 🙂
Yeah, me too. I’ve tried quite a few styles, tripels, dubbels, quadrupels. They are some of my favorites now. I’ll still drink a nice Harp though as you mentioned.
Who says Jim has to come? ; )
