A few weeks ago, Apple put out this iPad Pro commercial, notably asking the question, “What’s a Computer?”
Microsoft has an answer, a new commercial (shown below) that reminds me of the “I’m a Mac. And I’m a PC” ads of a decade ago, though this time with the roles reversed.
It reminds me of the same campaign, but possibly for a different reason. Microsoft is crowing about the complicated extras, and trying to paint that as an advantage over Apple’s simplicity.
The difference here isn’t the products relative positions on the platform but just the direction the spotlight is shining.
Great ad!
I would ask Cortana but it never understands me so what’s the point? People say Siri is unreliable – clearly they haven’t tried Cortana.
I was hoping they’d brag about a VGA port.
This ad just really misses the point of Apple’s iPad ad. The whole point of Apple’s ad was to question the preconceived notion of what a “computer” is (like the iPad itself is attempting to do). Microsoft’s ad is only furthering the conventional wisdom of that “computer.” Ports, traditional software, etc. I sure hope Microsoft is willfully missing the point solely for the sake of advertising.
You said more clearly what I meant in nine words. 🙂
Odd. That’s the opposite of what I usually do.
They believe they know their audience.
Considering the lack of a VGA port… probably not. I don’t think it’s crazy complicated. USB, DisplayPort, Headphones, Power. One might prefer an iPad Pro to a Surface Pro 4, but certainly not because of the crazy legacy ports all over the place.
And how hard was that institutional compulsion to overcome while the Surface designs were still being hammered out, I wonder.
