That iconic Usain Bolt photo

This seriously has to be one (or two) of the best photos ever taken. It’s interesting that two professional photographers took basically the same photo within milliseconds of the other.

  1. I don’t know. It’s certainly an interesting picture.
I’ve looked at a pretty high resolution version of this photo and zoomed into his face. He’s definitely looking behind him and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s more of a grimace than a smile.

  2. He was smiling at the Canadian runner next to him. He’s taken him under his wing and called him the next great runner. But for now, he was smiling and showing him who was great right now. 🙂

  3. I hadn’t heard that, if it’s in the linked story, I couldn’t read it because of the paywall. Thanks for the info!

  4. Unfrtunately I have not been able to watch too much of the olympics this year.
The chopper reference up there was about your teeth, I was wondering how that all worked out and if everything is still good?

  5. Pro tip: Google the headline of a WSJ story then click on the Google results link and you can read the whole story.

  6. He looks back in the last 5 m of almost every race except the finals. This allows him to confirm that he can shut it down and not risk an injury in the qualifying heats. But yes, there is a special bond between him and DeGrasse.

  7. To some extent, the coincidence of two nearly identical images is not hugely surprising. Two pros positioned next to each other at the finish line. Both know when, where and how to capture the climactic moment.

  8. They’re both amazing photos, but I think Spencer’s slightly longer shutter speed and the blurred feet tell the story better. He also caught Bolt’s arms at a more stable point in his run, though I honestly doubt that part was anything other than luck. Bolt was moving pretty fast!

  9. Yeah, because paywalls are the only way for anyone to make money on the internet. That is why this site has a paywall…
