Earlier today, Ad blockers found a way around Facebook’s attempts to block them, but Facebook is firing back saying the ad blockers are blocking posts too. The first question is why do posts from friends and families get confused as ad content? I know Facebook makes its revenue from ads and I’m okay with that, but I’d love a way to pay them instead. If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product. I don’t necessarily blame Facebook for trying to get around ad blockers because they are offering a free service (except they track and sell you).
I would absolutely pay to use FB to get rid of ads, but I can’t imagine that ever happening.
The first thing that comes to mind is this possibility: when a person likes a product, or posts on a product page, Facebook can show that on that person’s friends’ timelines. It’s an ad, plain and simple, on behalf of the product, but since it’s written by a friend, it’s “friend’s content” and thus blocked.
I say we shut down Facebook and call it a day.

Didn’t someone recently say they make $35 per member per year? I’d pay that for ads to go away. But they’re in a battle of the ideologues now, and it’s not going to end well.

Simple. Ad blockers, as they current stand, can detect ads but cannot splice the content so as to remove the ad, while keeping the original content intact.
That’s dumb. Plain and simple. You don’t like it? Don’t use it.

Strictly speaking, you are accurate. But people will not stop because (a) they don’t understand and are in fact incapable of understanding the difference; (b) they don’t care to understand the difference because it removes their ability to complain.
