  1. Off-topic. Slightly.

I just saw “Nerve,” and as I sat there in the theater, it hit me. I realized that the technology in the film would be slightly dated in 5 years and unbearably old-fashioned in 10 years.

Because the touchscreen smartphone drives the movie’s plot. And the touchscreen smartphone will be “your father’s mobile device” sooner than we think. Watching “Nerve” in 2026 will be like watching “The Departed” from 10 years ago (2006 Best Picture Oscar winner). Not comparing the quality of the films. Just the mobile device technology.

Tapping out text messages on a 2006 “feature phone” 10-key keypad is unthinkably primitive now. Tapping a touchscreen to launch apps and type text will be unthinkably primitive 10 years from now.

Frankly, “Nerve” will be long-forgotten by then anyway. Sappy teen-romance-amid-life-threatening-but-ridiculous-circumstances young-adult flick. With the Hollywood tradition of 24-year-old actors playing high school seniors. See “The Departed” instead.

The bright note was Emma Roberts. Adorable, talented, fascinating on-screen. She’ll be around for a long time.
