I don’t think listeners mind pitch corrected vocals, I think they mind overuse of pitch correction.
The best pitch correction is the one you can’t really hear. And you get that by starting with a good singer. The worse the singer, the worse the pitch correction sounds.
Wait, that sounded cryptic. I’ve used pitch correction (Melodyne) myself. When I’ve sung something well, and I apply pitch correction, it’s hardly noticeable, but it gives the performance that extra edge, that extra something. When I’ve sung badly, the pitch correction makes me sound like a clown, and I delete the track and try again.
