Apple’s new ad: iPad Pro — What’s a Computer?

I like it.

  1. Weak. Nothing shown there is unique to the iPad Pro. Apple should sell me on things that only the iPad Pro can do.

  2. Apple has a gift for sometimes pretending other computers and smartphones don’t exist.

  3. Modern Apple, sure. 2000s Apple certainly didn’t. The difference is, times have changed. Apple is now the incumbent, and no longer the darling underdog.

I think Apple is struggling to market the iPad. It doesn’t help that the iPad is also a maturing product.

The iPad needs something like the silhouette campaign for iPod. The ad campaign didn’t highlight any new feature, it simply advertised listening to music. The iPod didn’t have dazzling new breakthroughs every iteration, at the end of the day it just played music.

  4. Has a marketing campaign ever completely changed the fortune of a mature product, without a major change in the product itself? The iPad has a solid place in the consumer computing place. But consumers just don’t want to upgrade it as often as they do with the iPhone. There’s only so much disposable cash.

  5. Between this and Tom Cook saying the iPad is the future of computing and the fact that Mac updates are few and far between, it seems Apple is saying something about the future of the Mac. As a Mac user I find this distressing and depressing.
