Netflix and CBS Studios International today announced a landmark international licensing agreement for the new “Star Trek” television series. Netflix will be the exclusive premiere home of “Star Trek” in 188 countries (excluding the US and Canada). Each episode of the new series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.
Additionally, all 727 existing episodes of the iconic “Star Trek” television library – including “Star Trek: The Original Series,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Enterprise” will be available on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016.
The all-new “Star Trek” will begin production in Toronto in September for its January 2017 premiere.
Interesting move by Netflix to lock up this show for streaming at such an early stage. Also notable that they will stream the show globally within 24 hours of its US premiere. Will this become the new norm?
Within 24 hours of US premiere is what Netflix tend to with the current US shows they’re buying. They get branded as Netflix Originals and Star Trek joins Orphan Black. Fargo and Better Call Saul and many more as well I’m sure.
I wonder if this is a response to people complaining about having to sign up to CBS All Access to see the new series. As one of the complainers, I’m happy about this update.

it already is the norm for many shows. As others have said this is quite normal outside the US. Netflix is effectively just replacing another local TV network. Amazon is currently doing the same for Preacher and Mr Robot, at least in the UK.

CBS can such an egg if they think I’m paying them $5.99 a month to watch Start Trek. I’ll wait until it’s available in the US via Netflix, or I’ll be finding alternative sources for watching. No doubt it will be easy to watch it without getting ripped off.
No, because you still have to pay to watch it in North America on their proprietary streaming service.

Good luck with this but CBS will lose out when they find Star Trek to be the most pirated show on the net…10 minutes after it’s been broadcast.
They’re gonna have to do better, as their core market IS the tech savvy who won’t wait for it on Netflix, or shell out the $6 a month for one show.
