About 20-25% of auto accidents in the US are currently caused by people texting. Distracted driving while using the phone is the problem, not the game.
Unbelieveable.
The game is apparently in danger of becoming a major form of distracted driving. Please don’t play word games.
I agree that PGo will make a bad situation worse. Basically, just put your frickin phone away while you’re driving. In a year from now it won’t be Snapchat and Pokemon but something else.
Interesting… Yesterday my son was playing as we left the house. When my truck hit 20 MPH, the game blocked him.
It would be fascinating to observe US automobile fatalities if the cellphone hadn’t been invented.
I’m surprised more people don’t kill themselves accidentally by the sheer stupidity of their decisions. I look around me and I’m surrounded by imbeciles, and yet, somehow, they make it through the day.
This was my understanding, too: that the game didn’t work/update once you got over a certain speed (I had heard 6 mph).
That’s not a really great answer to the problem, either. Why shouldn’t you son be able to play?
Because, even though he was not driving, we were moving faster than the game allows. As many idiots as I see running off the edge of the road while texting–or even just talking–I’m all in favor of software limiting access while driving.
Our doorbell rang the other day, a rare occurrence. There are only two apartments with doorbells on our side of the building. Both buttons are clearly marked with last names. The woman who’d rung us was looking for our next-door neighbor, and immediately apologized for having gotten it wrong.
I pointed out that both doorbells were clearly identified. She seemed absolutely baffled by that.
I saw someone with a newspaper open over his steering wheel last week. The guy saw me looking at him and proceeded to flip me off for about a mile and a half. At least he put down the newspaper to give me the finger.
Can’t limit all stupidity, but where we can, I’m all for it like you are.
I can’t go along with that. It’s a nuclear response to the problem. Keep in mind that, even with driver distraction being a major problem, our roads are safer than at almost any time in our history. To not allow kids, spouses; anybody else in the car use a mobile device, just to ensure the driver can’t irresponsibly do so, is the luddite’s response; not to mention that it replaces any emphasis on personal responsibility with a one-size-fits-all, black-and-white answer.
Much more reasonable would be continued publicity campaigns against irresponsible use, higher penalties, and all the other stuff that’s worked for similar problems – seat belt use, drunk driving, etc – in the past.
