Bizarre spinning toys

My brothers and I were always fascinated by spinning things. We’d have competitions to find things to spin and see which ones would spin the longest. The cat hated that game.

Fair warning: The Physics Girl Youtube page will suck you in to all kinds of cool videos.

  1. Such as? I think the point is to get young people interested in physics and science.

  2. She only had five minutes, and a lot to cover. No time to explain what terms like “moment of inertia” mean. As GS says below, the idea is to get kids to investigate further.

  3. <<o. ✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:✸✸✸✸✸:::::::!uf320w:….,….

  4. I agree and I applaud her for that. With that said, she still needs to be scientifically accurate. One example is that she confuses the major and minor axis of a rigid body. The second is that she makes the statement that “energy must be conserved.” No, it does not need to be conserved, and in fact, it is the moment due to friction (which dissipates energy) that creates the phenomenon that she is demonstrating.

    I have seen her videos before and I appreciate what she is trying to do, but it brings into question that accuracy of videos on topics about which I am not an expert.

  5. Oh gosh, now you’re just being silly. Of course it has to conserve energy, or it wouldn’t go up on it’s end. It will sacrifice some energy temporarily through friction but the total energy is conserved.

    Stop baiting the norms. 😉

  6. No, it does not conserve energy. Mechanical energy is lost to heat, sound, and deformation. You have no idea what you are talking about.

  7. She is clearly aware of that, and even says so very clearly in the video. Also, energy is conserved; it is always conserved.* The fact that some is dissipated as heat through friction doesn’t change that, as it still exists in another form. She is clearly aware of all this stuff. Your argument is utterly pedantic, and still incorrect.

    Her videos are very good. What kind of person feels the need to tear this stuff down?

    • If you want to raise the pedantry to yet another level you can start blabbing about “mass-energy.” Don’t waste my time.
