Apple will pay $25 million to settle a patent lawsuit with Network-1 Technologies’ subsidiary Mirror World Technologies and license its patents, the companies announced today. The patent (No. 6,006,227) dates back to 1999, covering a system that stores documents in a stream ordered chronologically, similar to Apple’s Cover Flow or Time Machine.
Good. Pay, get it over with and move on.
Of course, the problem is that getting it over with has a tendency to embolden other potential sources of litigation. And then you haven’t really gotten it over with. It seems odd to my admittedly biased soul that Apple seems to pony up on these kinds of things, while Samsung never does. And I still chafe about Apple having had to pay—what was it, 9 figures?—over that “lists on a small screen” patent.
