Cliff Williams has played bass in AC/DC since 1977. By the time the group’s current tour wraps up in September, he’ll have logged nearly 40 years with the Australian rockers.
AC/DC has been through a lot this year: Malcolm had to retire due to dementia; Brian had severe hearing loss; and Phil had legal trouble. The only one left that wants to keep going at this point is Angus.
In the next ten year a few bands are going to have to address the issue of ageing members and what do they really want to do. Carry on, retire the band for good, or set up an “official” replacement band.
Paul Stanley from KISS said he would be open to the idea of KISS evolving without himself and Gene at some point.
At the end of the day is it the individual musicians – or the songs and show experience that people would want to see.

Interesting thought. To me, there is a difference, in two respects. First, some time the band members aren’t easily replaceable. Who can really replace Mick in the Stones and not just be a cover band? Second is the matter of new material. For some, perhaps most bands the songs are forgettable but for the best bands, the songwriting and music springs from the actual band members. Remove them and you won’t get new stuff that’s like, or as good as, the original stuff.
