Apple patent offers way to block camera from taking pics or recording

From the patent:

For example, an infrared emitter can be located in areas where picture or video capture is prohibited, and the emitter can generate infrared signals with encoded data that includes commands to disable the recording functions of devices. An electronic device can then receive the infrared signals, decode the data and temporarily disable the device’s recording function based on the command.

In other words, a jammer to prevent picture taking or video recording. I can’t imagine that this invention will ever find its way into a product. If it does, what’s to prevent someone from placing a nuisance jammer in a concert venue, or police from regularly carrying one to prevent unauthorized filming of an arrest?

  1. I have seen this patent before a few years ago, perhaps when it was first filed. it is more likely that Apple would patent it and shelve it, ensuring no-one else can do it.

  2. Bad bad bad bad idea.

Yeah, what about when someone tries to live broadcast any other human rights violation? All the violator has to do is turn on the jammer and no one can record it. Terrible idea.

  3. And then the Justice Department can simply block all recording and streaming of any event they like. Bad idea.
