Apple’s 2016 software updates are currently available only as closed developer previews. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we strongly recommend you stay away, at least until the public iOS and macOS betas in July, if not the general releases this fall.
I depend on my Apple Watch too much to make the update and will follow this advice.
That said, take a read through the article to get a sense of the big changes.
You don’t want to update to a developer preview, but I think everyone is busting to get this version.
While watchOS 3 beta 1 is buggy (dock is prone to crash, occasional freeze), I find it to be fairly stable enough. The battery life is good. Most apps seem to work fine.
The “two second interaction” model becomes more than 20 seconds with Maps on the watchOS 3 beta. Especially if I’m out of wi-fi range. It feels like a hardware and/or Bluetooth issue to me. Maybe the next-gen watch will be snappier.
Having said that, the Weather app really does pop into view with all temps visible. It used to be even slower than Maps. I suppose it depends on how many cities you have added to your list.
But I like the new dock and I agree that complications are really for launching your most-frequently-used apps. Not for adding traditional “fancy mechanical watch” features like moon phase etc.
Battery life seems to be almost the same as with 2.0, but it could be 10% less. This might be because I use the new Breathe app several times a day.
Nothing bad has happened since I installed 3.0 beta during WWDC week. Not even one crash. But one of the big features I’m craving is missing: Auto Unlock. Either missing or I simply haven’t figured out how to authorize my watch with Sierra.
Agree. Except that Maps is still ultra-slow.
Will try tvOS beta ASAP. I need to buy a USB-C cable at my local Apple Store.
That’s good to hear. Apple’s pre-production builds are far more stable than they used to be. Smaller, more frequent releases are working.
