The LR/Instagram plugin does exactly what you think it does: it lets you post images to Instagram directly from Lightroom. No need to export and use some third party Web client or get the photo onto your smartphone.
I’ve only just started to use Instagram more seriously. The “need” to post from the iPhone was a real pain. If you use both Instagram and Lightroom, this $10 donationware plugin will really come in handy.
I believe this may be against Instagram’s terms of service.

at least according to the documentation , there is no direct way to upload via the Instagram API:

At this time, uploading via the API is not possible. We made a conscious choice not to add this for the following reasons:
Instagram is about your life on the go – we hope to encourage photos from within the app.
We want to fight spam & low quality photos. Once we allow uploading from other sources, it’s harder to control what comes into the Instagram ecosystem. All this being said, we’re working on ways to ensure users have a consistent and high-quality experience on our platform.
so I am curious how this app works — if it is taking advantage of a publically unpublished API or doing a hack.
