The secret world of Foley

Vimeo:

Witness the magic of moviemaking and journey into the little known world of Foley Artists, who bring films to life with their perfectly-timed sound-effects.

You may not know what “foley” is but you’ve likely heard it in every live-action movie you’ve seen in the past 100 years. It’s a fascinating but unfamiliar job on a movie, one that is critical to the “realism” of what we see on screen. This video does a great job of showing the work that goes on behind the scenes with foley artists.

  1. I worked in the film industry in the late ’70s to early ’80s and am familiar with foleys.

One thing I’ve wondered about more recently, though, is on many TV shows and some films, say on a cop show where a car comes to a stop, I often notice a squealing brakes foley. Modern cars’ brakes don’t squeal unless they’re worn, and then it’s more of a grinding sound than a squeal.

This seems like a hold-over from the “old days” when it was normal for cars’ brakes to squeal.

So I’m wondering if it’s somehow foley artist union policy that there “must” be brake squeal foleys whenever a car comes to a stop.

    Job security?
