TidBITS:
I have no doubt that many people find change of any sort unsettling, but I’d like to encourage some calm and understanding. To go farther, can we have some optimism for the future? The only way our experience as Apple users will improve is if Apple and its community of developers are excited to make things better. Not every change makes a positive difference, but just as with evolution, a lot of changes must be tried before we can benefit from the successes.
With that in mind, let me address three common myths and misconceptions.
It’s sadly typical that, with anything Apple announces, there’s always a segment who will rend their garments and cry to the heavens about how much they hate whatever it is Apple is doing. The reaction to macOS Sierra is no different. As Adam points out, no one is forcing you to use macOS Sierra or any of its newest announced features.
Nice perspective from Adam Engst. The market Apple is aiming for doesn’t even know what Sierra is. Developers and tech people sometimes have blinders on, or see things only through their personal prism. Everything Adam says he has no need for, I use and like those features. A lot easier to not use a feature than to use one that isn’t available at all.
This sort of “self-centered, me me me” approach is rapidly becoming the norm. Technology has the potential to make humans smarter, more engaged and learned but only if they walk through the door and seek enlightenment at some level. Not only do I see people that struggle to shift their center and approach things from alternate points of view but many have desires that they cannot properly express or articulate.
I’ve often heard people exclaim that “new whizbang feature or OS isn’t revolutionary” but when asked what features would indeed be “revolutionary” none of the ones i’ve asked could provide an answer. It’s as they’re in some tech stupor in which they don’t know what revolution they want and expect some company to pull the rabbit from the hat and blow them away.
Ahh the squeaky wheel brigades! Every OS update is “Horrible! It bricked my Mac, erased all my data and ran off with my wife!” 🙂
Well, that “no one is forcing you” part is not really true. If you will buy any new Mac released after Sierra ships, you will have no supported downgrade option. Not that I would want one, but let’s be honest about it.
Personally, I see two features I like in Sierra (tabs in more applications and the auto-unlock thing) – both combined not even a point upgrade. There may be some more which have not been mentioned. My problem is rather that everything that Federighi has announced in the past does not really work. Beyond the basic mail and calendar thing (which could really need some upgrades, e.g. free/busy and private indicators in calendar, or group management in Contacts in iOS and on the web… since ages) everything Apple does in the cloud sucks (does not work at all, or not reliably).
Will I allow Apple (after destroying my music library more than once) to detect my unused files and move them (the answer is: fuck, no)? Will these features be as reliable as Handoff or Continuity or Air Drop or the foto stream and iCloud Library stuff (which sometimes need days to update, or simply never does it – I have 6 Apple devices and not the same photos/versions on any of those)? These guys have taken the “it just works” out of Apple in record time. And 10.11 did not bring the Snow Leopard like stability update it was supposed to be. Everything that did not work before (SMB anyone?) does still not work.
There is a simple fact: under people like Serlet and Forstall I did not need to go to iMore to read how-tos, and I did not need a magnifying glass (or assistive technologies) to read what is on my phone… I do not need Star Wars effects in messages, and I do not need a Siri that can’t understand even 10% of the names in my contacts (which admittedly is hard, since it contains people from over 60 countries, all with different pronunciations). I do not care if these features are there, I just do not use them. I just want the stuff I do (have to) use to work. Like, um, SMB… which is not working right since half a decade now.

Forstall was the one who introduced SIRI, was he not? As for the last sentence, why even bother to include it when you have answered it yourself (admittedly…).
I always wonder what these curmudgeons are arguing for. To not upgrade anything at any point and to keep using the same products we have right now for ever and ever? Err… how’d we get to where we are today? Certainly not by sticking with our slide rulers or proclaiming that “1024B is enough for everyone”.
Changes are always incremental. You may not see a need for Siri + Auto-Unlock today, but wait until you walk up to your iSight powered iMirror with iRetina in 20 years and ask it for personalised news and fresh coffee while you brush your teeth. That kind of thing has got to come from somewhere, and the integration has to start with baby steps at some point.

TLDR: “everything sucks wah wah”
youre the brigade that is being discussed.
“Technology has the potential to make humans smarter, more engaged and learned but only if they walk through the door and seek enlightenment at some level. ” Nailed it. Sadly, it would seem, if gauging by what’s shown on social media, most are happy to be set in their ways, and are ready to battle to the death to keep their narrow point of view from being widened.
