Apple won’t aid GOP convention over Trump

Politico:

Apple has told Republican leaders it will not provide funding or other support for the party’s 2016 presidential convention, as it’s done in the past, citing Donald Trump’s controversial comments about women, immigrants and minorities.

Unlike Facebook, Google and Microsoft, which have all said they will provide some support to the GOP event in Cleveland next month, Apple decided against donating technology or cash to the effort, according to two sources familiar with the iPhone maker’s plans.

Trump has trained his rhetorical fire on the entire tech industry, but he’s singled out Apple for particular criticism — calling for a boycott of the company’s products, and slamming CEO Tim Cook, over Apple’s stance on encryption.

It’s unclear how the company plans to handle the Democratic convention in Philadelphia this summer.

Not a huge surprise given some of the things Trump has said about Apple at the very least.

  1. When you run one of the biggest companies in the world, it’s impossible to avoid politics.

  2. Wells Fargo, UPS, Motorola, JPMorgan, Ford , and Walgreens have all pulled their support as well. Like Apple all these companies have supported both conventions in the past. Apple gets the most press because they are, well, Apple.

Setting politics aside all of these companies need to sell products to customers. ~70% of those customers view Trump as toxic so it will hurt their brands, and sales, to be associated with him.

  3. Trump is a big/little man that talking like an Italian dictator, yet some how manages to surprise people by saying the correct thing – even when it is not popular or approved by the liberal progs.

He could actually be the President of the United States and that could be a very bad thing – unlike Killary, which would (probably) only be a modernly bad thing.

  4. I would like Apple to go back to traditional computers – and focus on Sound Jam 2.0 – or ‘Apple Music/Apple Stream’… and stop delivering gimmicks like 3D mapping and the Force Touch. Things like Apple pay are starting to deliver.

  5. for Trump or Apple?
Some days it is difficult to tel which is the lesser of the two evils … (or crazies). This would be between Killary and Chump.

  6. It is best to stay out – as much as possible. Trump’s hair does not know what its mouth is saying.

  7. For Trump. Hillary doesn’t smell like roses, but it’s hard to say “difficult to tell the lesser of two evils” in this case without snickering.

  8. Apple’s just getting all the attention because Trump called them out specifically during the San Bernadino iPhone case. The media is framing this as a response to his comments instead of a simple non-endorsement because conflict sells.
