Apple made several interesting announcements today during its WWDC 2016 keynote. Here are the major announcements from the event.
The Apple WWDC keynote has just wrapped up. If you missed the video, Apple will likely have it available on iTunes and the Apple TV in a few hours. In the meantime, here is a wrap-up about the things Apple announced this morning. Which ones are you most excited by?
The watch announcements were important. And apparently I’m should be pumped about big ass emojis. Everything else was OK. I know they are pushing AI and Siri but those are long plays that will take years.
I was hoping for some iOS improvements for iPad Pros. I was really hoping for something around MacBook Pros (I know, I know – it’s WWDC) but I guess I’ll be buying the current model. sigh
Apple File System (APFS). HFS+ days are numbered. Finally we will be close to modern features.
I wouldn’t buy a current model unless you really need to get a machine now. If the calendar Q4 rumors are true you’re only 4-6 months from new Pros and if you’re like me, you run a machine for 3-4 years at least before upgrading. I’d want to see what the new machines have before plunking down cash now… unless, as I say, you just need a machine NOW.
WatchOS 3 of course. Siri SDK. Siri on the Mac perhaps… I really want to see if they bring out an Echo competitor. Siri on a Mac is cool, but a Siri in the home would be nice too.
I’m impressed by the work they’ve done with the UI on the watch, and the performance. It looks like the watch has even sorted for all it’s niggles.
On iOS I like the solution for quickly launching the camera, and the lock screen has become useful, where once it did very little. The new Music interface looks better, but I’ll wait till I’ve used it first. The iPad Pro got little extra for some reason. I’d like to see the split screen management get fixed. It takes ages to find the app you need sometimes, (scroll-scroll-scroll), and no drag and drop Maybe next time. Not sure about some of the stuff on messages, though.
Siri on the Mac will be fuckin’ amazing.
I think if I replace my squealing hard drive with something modern, I might get another few months out of it.
Switching from being a continual road warrior (2015 Macbook) back to a coder. Need a teeny, weeny little more power….
Thx.
So many things today fell under the category of “We’ll see.” It’s all about how well they work rather than how they look.
I want things to work brilliantly but, in recent years, actual usefulness of software just hasn’t been in the same ballpark as their promise. I mean, Universal Clipboard could be great or it could be a tiny bit of Hell added to all of my Apple products.
I did get the impression that actual UX people returned in a meaningful way. Some of the 3D Touch additions seem great, both aesthetically and functionally. The general readability and app design language appears to be a giant improvement. If Apple is moving away from Jony White-on-Whiter Ive UI, that’s the best news of the day.
I expected more ‘How’ than ‘What’ with Siri but perhaps that’s better left to the rest of the week’s sessions. It’s unclear to me how this is going to work without becoming a mess.
That number is at least 465, though. (Counting until fall 2017.)
Still, at least there’s a plan.

Watch OS 3.0 was the only thing that really made me happy. Seems like they fixed almost everything that was wrong about versions 1&2. Especially dedicating one of two hardware buttons to a function nobody uses was a bad idea. Much better now.
I like tabs in more applications and unlocking my Mac with my Watch, but this could have been done in a point update. Don’t care for Siri anywhere – I just don’t use it and have no intention to. All iOS updates are either gimmicks (all that iMessage bling-bling crap) or only supported with one or two companies in the US or China… I did not quite get the cross-device clipboard, I guess. Is this a multi-item clipboard (which would be great – even on just one device), or just the last copied item (which would be useless)?
Extremely disappointing on the iPad Pro front. Still no multi-user. Still no mean to handle files or at least deal with an external flash drive. Still no real mean of sharing files on iCloud Drive. No improvements to split screen. No plans for additional Apple Pay countries (pretty much all of Europe missing, and in the UK the transaction limit is so low that you can;t even pay breakfast in a London hotel). No commitment to increasing the transit data coverage (all the richest company on earth can do is adding two cities every six months?) Still no commitment to make POI data better (out of the almost 300 corrections I have sent for my city over the last two years they have not processed a single one). OK, I like the fact that I can see my lock screen again – but I could do that for almost a decade before the 6S Plus improved it…
Well, maybe next year’s WWDC keynote will be exciting again. Less gimmicks, less Federighi, get rid of that Cue asshat… and we have a winner.
Yeah toss in an SSD. You can either leave it if you sell your old Mac or you can remove it and use it as an external drive/backup target for the new one.
