Apple:
If you update to iOS 10 beta, you can remove some built-in apps from the Home screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
When you remove a built-in app from your Home screen, you also remove any related user data and configuration files. This can affect things like related system functions or information on your Apple Watch.
This is a little thing but it shows Apple is removing the hooks these apps had in the OS and making them stand alone. So we can delete them to our heart’s content.
Can you choose a default app to replace it with?
I don’t think “remove… from home screen” is accidental wording.
Sure, they won’t launch from other places. But that’s a matter of using common launch routines/respecting configuration, rather than actually deleting code.
(I think this is a good solution, fwiw.)

I always look forward to deleting third-party apps when an iOS update makes them unnecessary, but be able to delete stock apps is like manna from heaven. The question is whether some of the apps I want to delete are redundant or supplemental.
You can’t remove Game Center because it’s not in iOS 10 to begin with! Woo hoo! Ding dong the app is dead!
